Live Better ~
Join a Union.
Why Join a Union:
The Hawkeye Area Labor Council AFL-CIO exists to help all working families in the state of Iowa. We take great pride in the fact that we fight daily for those who may not be able to fight for themselves. We can help give all the tools they need to better their families’ lives through collective bargaining, community service, and political engagement at the local and state levels. I know firsthand what a union contract can do for your family. Everyone has a right in this country to organize and live a better life.
Rick Moyle, Executive Director
Hawkeye Area Labor Council AFL-CIO
The benefits of being a union member extends beyond the workplace. AFL-CIO Union Plus benefits help current and retired labor union members and their families save money and support them through major milestones, celebrations and hardships.
We are concerned with issues that affect unions, especially the right to organize and bargain collectively. We address the day to day issues that concern workers, including fair taxes, Workers’ Compensation, health care, unemployment compensation, education, consumer protection, social welfare and the environment.
We are the voice of its membership at City Councils, Board of Supervisors and School Boards to ensure their actions benefit working families.
What our members say:
Being a Union Member for the last 34 years has brought a great many things to my life....
I've had the ability to provide an amazing life for my family because I am earning a Good Wage with Good Benefits. Being able to collectively bargain as a membership rather than each individual begging for a raise from their employer, is an amazing power to have. Having a good Health Care Plan has meant not having to worry about getting ill and having to decide whether to go to the doctor or fight through an illness at home. Financial confidence for my retirement with two retirement plans, a 401K and Social Security. The camaraderie of the membership on and off the jobsite. Having gone through an Apprenticeship shortly after High School, I have No College Debt.

Being a Union Member has given me peace of mind and a chance to provide a good life for my famiy.
I get peace of mind from the fact that the work rules and procedures are agreed upon in our contract and cannot be changed without being mutually agreed on. I also can plan ahead knowing that our wages and raises are guaranteed for the length of the contract. This allows my family to better plan for our future.
